Coming to Germany

Contacting the authorities

Foreign nationals who wish to live and work in Germany will need to deal beforehand with several public authorities and their regulations.
Entry is simplest if you are a citizen of another EU country. You only need a valid identity card or passport. Then you can stay in Germany for up to three months without a residence permit. This rule is also applied to citizens of states in what is known as the “positive list”, including Japan and the US.

People from other countries may apply to German missions (embassies or consulates) in their home countries for a visa for Germany.

Contact information for German diplomatic missions is available on the web site you find below.
